5 die from Malaria and Diarrhea in Refugee Camp

Five children are reported to have succumbed to an out break of Malaria and diarrhea at Sango Bay Refugee Camp in Rakai District.

The camp is home to over 4,650 refugees who crossed into Uganda after they were ordered out of Tanzania, following a directive by the Tanzanian President H.E Jakaya Kikwete to get rid of non Tanzanians in his Country.

The refugees are of Rwandan origin who had fled.

The camp lacks medical enforcements as well as medical workers. With the big number of refugees, there are only two doctors overseeing medical treatment.

These are charged with treating children, elders and pregnant mothers.

The camp has over 20 expectant mothers who also are at risk of losing their babies if the problem is not urgently addressed.

There are no mosquito nets or even other medical kits supplied to the camp.

Ministry of Refugees and Disaster preparedness has called upon well wishers to come in and save the situation.
State Minister of Disaster and Refugees Musa Echweru said the ministry has done all they can but it has not been adequate for the overwhelming number of refugees.
