The co-joined twins from Fort portal District that were last month admitted at the Mulago National referral hospital have passed on.
The two boys were born on 15th October at Buhinga Hospital. On realizing that they could not manage the state of the children, the hospital administration decided to refer them to Mulago hospital where they have been for close to two weeks in the special care unit.
It was ascertained that the boys, Robert and Francis shared the most vital body organs of the heart, liver and gut which made it difficult for them to breath with one heart supporting both of them. They were scheduled for an operation once they attained the recommended weight for such an operation.
According to the hospital spokesperson, Mr. Enock Kusasira, the twins passed on Tuesday morning following a diagnosis which revealed multiple complications including having one ventricle that supplied blood, mixing both oxygenated and deoxygenated blood.
“Their chances of survival were slim because they had one heart that was supporting the two of them yet the rest of the organs were functioning as one,” Mr Kusasira said.
It was established that they had one gut and shared intestines which presented another complication in feeding as one of them had to survive on the other.
The twins, were born to Ms Olivia Kaminder and Mr Robert Kyaligonza..They were admitted at Mulago Hospital late last month with fever and respiratory problems.
