On the 9th-Oct-1982, Uganda was handed its flag and declared independent from the colonial rule of the British Leadership.
All the instruments of power were handed over to the Ugandans and Kabaka Sir Edward Mutesa 2 was made Uganda's first president with Dr Milton Obote as the vice president. Obote later over threw Edward Mutesa after he attacked His Mengo palace. Mutesa was only saved by his servants who helped him flee to exile where it is claimed that he was poisoned and his remains were flown back to Uganda where he lays in rest.
On the 9th-Oct-2012, Uganda will be celebrating 50 years of independence and self rule. Many people still wonder however if the country is trully independent basing on the fact that Uganda still has its budget financed by foreign aid.
Alot is still desired if Ugandans are to enjoy the joy of being independent. The health and education sectors demand alot to be worked on. Medical accessibility in the country is poor and its common to see people walk close to 10km to the "nearest" health facility to access medical attention.
The Education index in Uganda is too low compared to other countries of the same age of independence. Illiteracy levels are so high and its common to find a family where non of the members has attended school or can hardly speak English which is the official language in Uganda.
Unemployment levels are unbearably so high especially among the youth who come out of school with no skills of business management and yet in big numbers. Its estimated that about 86% of the youth in Uganda are unemployed afact that has contributed to increase in crime rates as many look for ways of surviving the tough and high living standards in the country.
Therefore as we prepare to celebrate 50 years of independence, the government needs to look at all problems affecting its citizens especially the unemployment problem which is a key hindrance to economic growth and development.
