Ugandan MPs receive free iPads

Uganda legislators and Ministers were on Thursday handed the controversial free iPads that are purportedly meant to help them in executing their duties as Members of Parliament (MPs).

According to a statement from the Pariament of Uganda, 384 iPads were handed to the MPs, costing Uganda whooping $375,616 of tax payers money.

Presiding over the handing over of iPads to MPs, Parliament Speaker Rebecca Kagada appealed to MPs to accelerate the transaction of parliament business now that all the necessary documents will go online.

Kadaga said the money used to buy the ipads was obtained from the parliamentary savings and not from the Ministry of Finance.

The MPs were advised to rightly use the gadgets as they are expected to hand them back to Parliament on expiry of their term of office.

The iPads are in life with the E-governance system that was launched in 2012.

Uganda is one East African Country where most of her citizens are living below the poverty line yet many times, money is used for personal benefits for Members of Parliament.
