Fire guts Owino Market (Park Yard) again

Property worth millions of shillings was this morning destroyed in a fire that gutted Park Yard Market, part of the busy and common Owino Market in the Kampala business district.
The fire is believed to have started at around 4:30am in the morning and spread across the market section.
Police fire brigade got the place on time but accessibility became a problem and therefore it took them some time to get to the fire and put it off.

Over 20,000 traders operate in the market. They mainly sell used merchandise like clothes, shoes, bags among other items.

This is the third time this same section of Owino market is getting burnt in a period of less than five years.

In 2009, traders woke up to news that their merchandise had been reduced to ashes. The same happened on 30th July 2011, as Buganda prepared for the coronation of the Kabaka of Buganda. Property worth millions have been destroyed in these fires.

No report however about the market fires has been produced by government despite claims that investigations into the fires have been conducted.

Roads around the City Center were closed off to avert criminals taking advantage of the fire. Security was heightened around the affected areas as well.
