Kyambogo Students launch sit-down strike

The crisis at Kyambogo University continues to deepen each and every day that passes, with students launching an "indefinite'' sit-down strike which will last until lectures resume at the institution.
The strike that started on Tuesday is in reaction to continued failure by lecturers, on strike as well, to teach the students.
Prof. Omolo Ndiege
Student leaders said they will take turns sitting on the floor in front of the university administration block until management and staff resolve the on-going lecturers strike.

The institutions's lecturers went on strike two weeks ago demanding the immediate resignation of the vice chancellor, Isaiah Omolo Ndiege, who was reinstated to this position by the High Court.

Ndiege had been suspended by the University over accusations of flouting procurement procedures and demonizing staff.

Ndiege has since, however, said he is ready to work with staff at the university, to no avail from them (staff).

Who is responsible for fake Money in ATMs

“I went to an ATM to withdraw money and from the 20 pieces dispensed by the machine, 2 were found to be fake. I went to the banks and explained to the customer care officer and they told me they were not in position to help me because I had no proof that the fake money was actually picked from their ATM”, complained a customer of Top bank in Uganda.

This customer is not alone. Cases of fake notes being issued by Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) are on the rise in the Country, with most of these cases reported whereas others are not reported.
Customers claim that even if they report such incidences to the Banks they are not helped at all because they have no evidence to hold the Bank accountable to the counterfeit notes.

When you go to a bank, the instruction displayed on the counters is, “check and count your money before you leave the bank. However in the case of ATM, there is no attendant to whom you can complain in case of a fake note being issued by the machine.

Because of lack of evidence by customers, banks are not willing to accept responsibility for the counterfeit notes issued by their ATMs and therefore have to bear with the losses.

Asked how counterfeit notes get into ATMs, a staff from a top Bank in the country, who preferred anonymity, said, at times the custodians charged with loading ATMs with cash are the first culprits and are the initiators of such unprofessional behaviors.

“They connive with counterfeit makers to have a safe passage of fake money through the machines. When the deal is complete, the custodian and the fake money makers then share the proceeds. These custodians have made it a business to load fake notes in ATMs”, he said

Other banks have vehemently denied knowledge of the source of the counterfeit notes despite being picked from their own branch ATMs.

British Music Composer Sir John Tavener dies at 69

Sir John Tavener, one of the leading British composers of the 20th and 21st Centuries, has died at the age of 69.
Sir John was known for music that drew on his deep spirituality.
In 1992, The Protecting Veil topped the classical charts for several months and in 1997 his Song For Athene was played at the funeral of Princess Diana.
He had suffered ill health for much of his life, culminating in a heart attack in 2007 that led him to spend four months in intensive care.
Previously, he had suffered a stroke in 1979, and in 1990 was diagnosed with Marfan Syndrome, a hereditary condition that can cause heart defects.
His other well-known works included A New Beginning, which was chosen to see in the new century at the end of 1999 in the Millennium Dome in London.
James Rushton, managing director of Sir John's publisher Chester Music, described him as "one of the unique and most inspired voices in music of the last 50 years".
"His large body of work is one of the most significant contributions to classical music in our times," he said.

A statement said he died peacefully at home in Child Okeford, Dorset, on Tuesday."For all of those fortunate enough to have known him, John was a man of strong beliefs, huge personal warmth, loyalty and humour. He will be much missed."
Sir John began his career on The Beatles' Apple label in the 1960s and was one of the few contemporary composers to find wide acclaim beyond the classical world.
He was nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize twice - in 1992 and 1997 - and was knighted in 2000.
Having converted to the Russian Orthodox Church in 1977, he once said that "my way towards God has been to write music".
Despite being told by doctors that he would not be able to work after his 2007 heart attack, he did resume composing and premiered three works at the Manchester International Festival this summer.
