Transport fares hiked ahead of Christmas festivities

With few days to go to this year's Christmas day, transporters have hiked transport fares from Kampala to upcountry districts, with most of them almost doubling.

Many people are stranded at the key bus parks due to lack of adequate transport back to the villages to have the festive celebrations with their families.

The fares from Kampala to Mbarara, that were at sh20,000 have been increased to sh35,000, Kampala to Kasese via the Mbarara route is now at sh40,000, up from sh25,000. 

Kampala to Fort Portal is now at sh35,000 up from sh20,000. 

Kampala to Lira is now at sh30,000, up from sh20,000 and Kampala to Gulu the fares have increased to sh35,000.

Mbale fares have also gone up to sh25,000, from the previous sh13,000.

The transport operators attributed the hike in fares to the high number of travelers moving to the upcountry districts compared to those coming to the city.

The operators of Link buses, that ply mainly the Western route said the fares will rise even further by the end of this week.
