Police and Students of Makerere University Business School (MUBS) were on Saturday involved in running battles after students of the Business institute went on strike, protesting against the institution's decision to deny them examinations unless they have cleared 100% of their fees.
Students blocked most of the roads to and from the University, affecting traffic flow for close to three hours.
When Police was called in to quell the situation, students went wild and started pelting bottles and stone at Police, prompting them (police) to fire tear gas and live bullets in the air.
The students did not only stop at pelting police officers but also passers-by tested the wrath of these students.
Properties were destroyed as students tried to loot from businesses close to the university, and several students injured in the clashes.
When contacted, Peter Odoki, the university’s spokesperson said the university policy states that students need to pay 100 percent tuition by the sixth week.
“We are just stipulating the Makerere University rules and actually most of them had paid 100 percent,” he said.
He pointed out that security has taken over the university and that they will wait until Monday to decide the students’ fate.
