As a result of the heavy rains experienced in Kasese District, transport between Kasese and Fort Portal has been cut after the main Mubuku bridge developed cracks, forcing engineers from the National Roads Authority to stop heavy trucks to and from Kasese from crossing over the bridge.
All heavy trucks were advised to use the Mbarara-Masaka route to access Kasese District. The Kampala-Fort Portal route that goes through Kasese to Democratic Republic of Congo is shorter as compared to Mbarara-Masaka route.
The closing of the Fort Portal-Kasese route means an extra transport cost has to be incurred by all those who use the route.
Buses that could not make U-turn had to be offloaded first before they could be allowed to cross over the bridge as it was a risk to lives to allow them cross with passengers.
Kasese has been hit by floods caused by heavy rains that have led to destruction of property worth millions, displacement of residents and death of over ten people.
Efforts are being made by the Uganda Red cross society and other bodies to deliver relief items to the affected Kilembe residents
