Events that made news headlines in Uganda in 2012.

The year 2012 in Uganda ended on a good note for some and to others it was a year of regrets and they will never forget in their lives.
Several events characterized the year as we have summerised them below.

Implication of Hons. Kiddu Makubuya and Sydha Bumba.
  • They were involved in a compensation saga of City tycoon Hassan Bassajja Balaba over cancelation of  city market contracts. 
  • They compensated him more than it was worth.
  • MPs signed for their censure.
Firing of Uganda Broadcasting Council top Executive.
  • Accused of selling the Council's land illegally.
  • Abuse of office.
  • Corruption.
Implication of Hon.Kabakumba Matsiko
  • She was a minister of information
  • Was accused of illegally using UBC's transmission machines on her own radio station.
  • Was characteristic of improper public conduct.
Golola Moses losing a kick boxing tittle fight to Hungarian Mate Zamboki
  • All the threats he had made could not save him.
  • He was branded a comedian by the fans. 
Walk to work demonstrations and chaos
  • Staged by opposition leaders to compel the government 
  • Besigye and other leaders were arrested and tortured.
  • Led to the death of a police officer, John Bosco Ariong.
Fraud at Makerere University
  • The Vice Chancellor Venasius Baryamureba was forced out of office.
  • Implicated of financial mismanagement.
  • Economist John Ddumba Sentamu was appointed as the Vice Chancellor.
Kiprotich Olympic gold medal.
  • It was Uganda's second gold medal at the Olympics after over 40 years.
  • He was accorded a heroic welcome from London
  • Was hosted at State House by President Museveni
  • Received shs.200m from the President
  • Received over USD 300,000 solicited by Vision Group Uganda.
Golden Jubile Celebrations
  • Uganda marked 50 years of self rule at Kololo and the event was well attended by several Presidents from Africa and beyond.
  • Shs.21.5 billion was spent on a one day event.
Speaker Rebecca Kadaga confrontation of western countries over the homosexuality bill.
  • She lashed out at those threatening Uganda
  • She was received at the airport as a hero by the Anti-gay activists.
Ghost Pensioners.
  • Tax payers' money disappearing to non existing pensioners.
  • Accounts and property of the implicated individuals were freezed.
  • Some bankers from Cairo Bank were also implicated.
Office of Prime Minister(OPM) scandle.
  • Billions of money were swindled in the office of the prime minister by principal accountant and permanent secretary was quized by MPs how money went missing in his watch.
  • The first lady was also said to be part of the scam.
  • Principal accountant was arrested and taken to Luzira prison.
Tooro Princess wedding.
  • She went against her own culture and married an outsider.
  • Many Tooro regents were against her marriage to an American since culture requires someone of her status to respect her culture and marry a fellow Mutooro.
Uganda wins CECAFA TUSKER CHALLENGE CUP.
  • It became their 13th tittle.
  • They played at Namboole as the hosts and won their ach-rival Kenya.
  • Players rejected USD.700 reward from FUFA which had been given USD.30.000 as a reward for winning the trophy.
The Oil debate saga.
  • There was trading of words amongst MPs in the house on clause 9 of the bill.
  • Museveni summoned Parliament over the matter in which he exchanged words with Butaleja Woman MP, Cerinah Nebanda, a day before she was declared dead due to poisoning.
The Nebanda death.
  • She was allegedly poisoned.
  • The public pointed fingers at the government and asked them to accept responsibility.
  •  Postmortem report from Mulago says she died of poisoning while the government medical report says she died of drugs and narcotics.
  • MPs were arrested over their remarks over the Nebanda death.
