At the end of the month of August 2012, Makerere University, Uganda's top institution of higher learning and one of the best in East Africa, got a new Vice chancellor replacing long time acting vice chancellor Venasius Baryamureba who was also thrown out of the race following a
court injunction to vie for the same post he had held for close to seven years due to poor performance record.
Babyamureba was replaced by one of the longest serving professors of the institution, Prof. Dr Ddumba Sentamu, an economist and author of a number of eonomics books in the East African region. Because of his Economic background, he was welcomed by many of the staff at the University who felt releaved after getting rid of Baryamureba whom they accused of mulrunning the pride of Uganda's education.
After the appointment of Dr. Ddumba, Venasius threw in the towel and left the institution to concetrate on his own personal businesses. This has however been looked at by critics as a way of running away from his wrongs and trying to beat the long arm of the law as he has been implicated in many cases of financial mismanagement. A case in point was the billions of shillings that was meant to sponsor PhD students which later went missing under his overlook.
At the time Ddumba is taking over the institution, he is likely to face a good number of challenges, looking at the fact that alot was still being demanded from Baryamureba, like staffing issues, remuneration of both the teaching and non teaching staff, student issues, financial mismanagement all of which will now have to be carried over to Ddumba. This implies that if Ddumba is to become a "Saviour" as most people at the institution have termed him, these should be the main issues to deal with.
We wish you Dr. Ddumba all the best as you take over the institution and try to improve it image across the globe as it has at times been tainted by critics.
